Welcome to my website

Hi, my name is Barkley.  I was born on July 10, 1991, in Welshpool, Wales.  I am an English Cocker Spaniel and golden in colour (of course, I've got a fair bit of grey in my fur these days).

My mum and dad are Errigal Honey Countess (Dam) and Georgie Porgie of Penevan (Sire).

My birth name is Brunant Gold'n Delicious (Kennel Club Registration Certificate No. R3722201R03); but everybody calls me Barkley.

I was adopted by my human parents, Michael and Linda, in September, 1993.  I spent the first couple years of my life living in an apartment never going outside ...  my mum and dad rescued me!

I lived in England with my new mum and dad until we moved to Canada in October 1996.  We settled in British Columbia in a town near Vancouver.  Whilst living in England, we travelled about everywhere; places like ... London (I liked dad taking me into the Tubes ... I helped him with the escalators), Wales (walking in the hills of Snowdon and into many of the Welsh castles), Tintagel (looking for Arthur and Merlin, of course), and even to Scotland (looking for Nessy in her loc ... I know she's out there somewhere!) ... and many other places too numerous to remember and list.

I remember as a kid playing on Mt. Snowdon, in Wales, running about with those big white dogs on the mountainside (my mum says they're sheep; but, I think they're just big white dogs).  When we moved to Canada, my mum and dad would take me into the local mountains nearby to play in the snow.  I liked making 'dog snow-angels' and rooting about in the snow finding all kinds of new smells.  And sometimes, it even snows at our house, as well!

And, speaking of playing with other dogs, we once camped in Jasper, Alberta, where there were really big brown dogs stamping about (I heard my dad say they were elk); and ... my mum wouldn't let me play with them, either!

I don't run about the yard and house so much these days.  I seem to remember being able to run all the way from the back deck down the stairs to the back fence to keep strangers away.  Nowadays, I don't run down stairs; or any other place these days.  I take my mum for lots of walks; some short, but some long.  Most of the time mum or dad will carry me up and down the stairs; I really can't do it very well these days.  But, that's ok 'cause I get to hug on them, then.

My vision doesn't seem to be as good anymore.  My mum tells me I have cataracts and they are making me not see so well.  The funny thing is that I cannot hear so well, either.  My dad has a piece of paper that says he doesn't hear; I wonder if my mum has one for me.

My typical day goes like this:

  • I get up about 8 a.m. for breakfast.

  • After breakfast and a visit outside, I return to my bed for a morning nap in mum's office ... sometimes I sleep under mum's desk, sometimes on my blanket near the wall and bookcase.

  • In any event, I'm able to take my nap 'til about 12:30 p.m.; and then it's time for lunch!

  • After lunch, I usually help my mum do errands in the car.

  • And, usually, we are back by 5-ish; and the back to bed.

  • Mum makes me eat again ... usually about 8 p.m.; in fact, she's been known to make me eat dinner!

  • And, finally, to bed about 9 p.m. for a good sleep after a long, hard day.

There you have it; my typical day.  I seem to sleep a fair bit more than when I was younger.

Currently, I have to take a few meds to help me with my conditions.  I don't know what they do but my mum tells me that they each help me ... and that's ok 'cause I know she loves me so much; and I love my mum so much, too.

Here's a short list of my meds:

  • Cyprohepteadine ... for appetite

  • Apo-Benazepril ... for blood pressure

  • Metronidazole ... for small intestine

  • Diarsanyl ... for large intestine

  • Propalin ... for nausea

  • Cephalexin ... an antibiotic

  • Lysodren ... for cushings

  • Apo-Naproxen ... an anti-inflamatory

  • Ursodiol ... for the liver

  • Loperamide ... for diareah

  • Metoclopromide ... for vomiting

  • High-Cal + Nutri-Cal ... for calorie increase

  • Vi-Sorbits ... vitamins

  • Osteo O-3 ... Vitamins

Please write to me at barkleymydog@hotmail.com.  I'm pretty old; do you know any others my age?  My mum would love to hear from you.

It is with heavy heart we announce the passing of our beloved boy, Barkley.  He passed away on June 16, 2009, making him 17 years, 11 months, 6 days old.  We were all together in the end as his mum cradled him in her arms as he left us.

Only now are we truly beginning to realize his profound impact on our lives during these past 16 years.  Our loss will take quite a while to come to terms; the void his absence has created cannot be filled.

He's gone now; but his spirit and love will live and remain with us always.

Our dearest Barkley, thank you for being in our lives.

Love Mum and Dad
